The Federal Bundesland of Hesse should also receive EU infrastructure funds in the period after 2020 according to the Hessian State Secretary for Europe, Mark Weinmeister.  This matter is of utter importance for Hesse because of the many projects and investments that the funds help to carry out, and directly ease the lives of citizens.

For the Minister of European Affairs of Hesse, Lucia Puttrich, “it is not self-evident that funds shall be available for Hesse, and hence it is rather important that Hesse is directly involved in the decision process of the regions”. The motivation behind it was a common statement singed by almost 200 (out of 276) regions concerning the future of the EU’s regional policies after 2020. All regions sharing the same edifice with Hesse, that is Emilia Romagna, the Nouvelle Aquitaine as well as Wielkopolska are signatories to the initiative.

The common statement was presented at Brussels to the President of the Committee of Regions, Markku Markula, European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Crețu as well as the Chairwoman of the Regions Committee at the European Parliament, MEP Iskra Mihaylova.

For State Secretary for European Affairs, Markus Weinmeister, the strategy can only be successful if supported by other regions, then there is a real chance to influence the decision-making process.

Hesse receives in the ongoing period that lasts up to 2020 an amount of 240,7 million EUR from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRD).
