Monday, 17 October 2016, Brussels: Rose Gottemoeller took up her post as NATO’s Deputy Secretary General. It is the Alliance’s second most senior international civil servant, and she is the first woman to serve in this capacity.
Deputy SG Gottemoeller most recently served as US Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security, advising the Secretary of State on arms control, non-proliferation and political-military affairs.
On 6 August 2015, Gottemoeller made history by becoming the first senior US American official to attend the memorial of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in Japan by the United States at the end of World War II. It marked the 70th anniversary of the bombing and Gottemoeller was accompanied by the incumbent 29th US ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy.
