For the very first time since its creation in 1937, the Queen Elisabeth Competition (Dutch: Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd, French: Concours Musical International Reine Elisabeth) included participation from cellists. To mark the milestone, the competition royal patron, HM Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, was accompanied to the performances by HRH The Duchess of Gloucester (UK/Commonwealth) and HRH Princess Sarvath El Hassan of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, whose husband was in Brussels for as a keynote speaker for Friends of Europe.
