8 August 2018, Commonwealth of Australia: The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini paid a visit to Australia wherein she expressed her desire for a swift negotiation of a free trade agreement with Australia as an example against protectionism.
For the latter goal, Mogherini met with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in Sydney to discuss a range of issues including trade liberalisation.

Julie Bishop said during a joint press conference that achieving the trade deal with the 28-nation bloc was a priority for Australia. Therein Mogherini also welcomed Australia’s commitment to contribute civilians to the EU mission in Iraq.

Federica Mogherini was also received by the personal representative of HM The Queen of Australia, General Sir Peter Cosgrove, 26th Governor-General of Australia, for a courtesy call.
