Thursday, 16 August 2018, Washington D.C., USA: Senior Policy adviser Brian Hook was appointed “Special Representative for Iran”.
This move came as the Trump administration is prepared to increase economic pressure on Iran, by restoring sanctions, to force Tehran to end its nuclear weapons programme as well as support for militant groups in the Middle East, particularly in Yemen and Syria.
Hook is entrusted the newly established “Iran Action Group”, which shall coordinate the State Department’s pressure campaign on Iran. Iran Action Group will be responsible for directing, reviewing and coordinating all aspects of the State Department’s Iran-related activity, and will report directly to the US State Secretary.
