Friday, 7 October 2016: His Majesty King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands presented the Royal Award for Free Painting in 2016 at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. Four young artists received this incentive linked to a monetary amount of 6,500 EUR. After the ceremony The King opened the exhibition of the winning works as well as a selection of other entries.
The Royal Award for Free Painting (Koninklijke Prijs voor de Vrije Schilderkunst) was established in 1871 by King William III. After King William III, the queens Emma, Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix and now King Willem-Alexander have continued this tradition. The awards is intended to encourage young talent in the field of painting. That is it is intended for Dutch visual artists of up to 35 years of age. This year there were more than 240 artistic entries.
The exhibition is open to the public from 8 October 8 till 15 November 2016 at the Royal Palace Amsterdam.
