Ambassador-designate Grenell had already been nominated by President Donald Trump in September 2017 yet his confirmation process stalled for a few months. Also the video should stay to tune in at 47:09 to watch:   Albeit a political appointee, Mr Grenell has a plethora of diplomatic experience having served between 2001 and 2008 as Director of Communications and Public Diplomacy at the USA Permanent Representation to the UN and the Security Council based in New York. All in all through four different ambassadors to the UN. In 2009 he founded the communications consultancy firm Capitol Media Partners. Alireza Jahangiri and the Iran nuclear deal

H. E. Alireza Jahangiri, Ambassador of Iran. The Ambassador of H.E. Dr.  Alireza Jahangiri, met once again with the media in a press meeting breakfast at his residency. Early in the morning and before the start his agenda of the day he asked several journalists on their opinion of the Iran nuclear deal and the recent view of the United States on it. With this, he began the conversation one of the most important subjects of contemporary politics, namely the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This nuclear deal, according to Jahangiri, is a great achievement in the international arena as it can be viewed as a triumph of diplomacy over confrontation. Therefore, the deal should be maintained by all means. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed Iran’s commitment to JCPOA over ten times, therefore indicating that Iran is fulfilling all the required obligations. However, as stated by the Ambassador, “the government of the United States has wrong interpretations on the deal, as it regards it as an economic deal rather than a non-proliferation tool. Therefore, it is rather about security vs. insecurity instead of access to markets. With this increasing hostility and uncertainty from the side of the United States of America, skepticism about the continuity of America’s participation in the agreement is heightened.” Nevertheless, the main concern for Iran is cautioning European countries against wavering on issues that go beyond of the scope of the nuclear agreement. For history not to repeat itself, it is imperative that Europe helps Iran to ensure that the agreement will be maintained. Before the talks that lead to the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran already negotiated with Britain, France and Germany, who then persuaded the American president at the time, George W. Bush, to give diplomacy a chance. As a return, Iran was asked to temporarily freeze on uranium-enrichment-related activities to establish confidence. “Two years after negotiation, European states, under pressure from the US, were demanding that Iran should abandon all enrichment activities. Following this, the negotiation talks fell apart without any result. Following sporadic talks, in 2013, negotiations began once again, this time directly with the United States. The point on ending uranium enrichment within Iranian soil was not mentioned anymore, therefore also leading to successful negotiations. The nuclear deal that was established out of this created a good opportunity for cooperation between European states and Iran. “ According to Jahangiri, Europe should not pander to Washington’s determination to focus the shift on what he considers to be an unnecessary crisis as this will only bring back dynamics of mistrust and insecurities. The Islamic Republic of Iran considers any non-nuclear sanctions against itself to only further complicate the situation, therefore also having a detrimental impact on the JCPOA. In fact, Iran is preparing for a worst case scenario in which the nuclear deal would fail. This clearly illustrates that Iran not under all circumstances will remain committed. Iran’s military capabilities are entirely defensive, as stated by the Ambassador, which stems from sober geostrategic calculations as well as moral and religious convictions. This position is further based on the historical experience by Iran. “Through the Iran-Iraq war, Saddam Hussein rained Soviet-made missiles on the cities, on which the world not only kept silent on but then would also not enable Iran to buy weapons in order to deter the aggressor at the time. Because of this, Iran believes that missiles are an effective means of deterrence and the focus on precision rather than range has opened up the possibility for striking back with pinpoint accuracy. No administration of Iran will leave its people defend less, a crucial point European states and the international community should realize. Important stakeholders in the region and internationally remain reluctant to hold the arsonist to account in the conflicts within the region.” “Dr. Mohammad Javad Zafir, the Foreign Minister of Iran, presented a proposal in 2015 for a regional dialogue forum in order to bring Iran and its neighbors together to work towards peace. This is making Iran hopeful that stakeholders outside the region of the Middle East will focus their efforts on urging their allies to propose such peace. Iran hopes that such dialogue can be the beginning of a good start towards peaceful times.” ———————— Photography by G.N.S. NL.

We have gathered here today to bid farewell to our distinguished colleague and exemplary diplomat Her Excellency Dr.Vjosa Dobruna, Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
H.E. Ms. Andrea Gustović-Ercegovac, Ambassador of Croatia.
On this occasion, I am honoured to be able to say a few words about my dear colleague and friend. Prior to joining diplomatic service, Dr. Dobruna had a dedicated career as a practicing pediatrician, a human rights advocate and a campaigner, as well as active contributor to the causes that matter, mainly dedicated to human rights and freedoms. Dear Colleagues, Dear Ambassador Dobruna, I would like to express admiration for the work and the achievements of your mandate and gratitude for the cooperation, both personal and official. People have their impression and opinions about my country and I have mine which I tried to introduce here! My country is not in the news for war and conflict, but it is for successes in different fields of life. I had spoken to many, many students in different universities and spoke to lots of media about the achievements in my country during this years, and about how much more needs to be done in the future. Only if we can convince EU to come up with common policy regarding my country and the region!. It is not only we join Europe tomorrow, but support the region in integration so we can change our countries.
The Ambassador of Kosovo and the Ambassador of Albania, H.E. Mrs. Adia Sakiqi.
It has been pointed out that I am not a professional diplomat; I have been accused of practicing “activist diplomacy” that is what I am and will continue to be. So, please help my successor in that endeavor of integrating Kosovo in international organizations. As Ambassador, I was lucky to have been involved in several important visits in the past years. In December 2013, President of the Republic, Ms. Atifete Jahjaga visited Netherlands and was received in audience with His Majesty King Willem Alexander, PM Mark Rutte and Ankie Broekers-Knol, President of the Senate and Speaker of Tweede Kamer, Anouchka van Miltenburg.
H.E. Dr. Mr. Homoyoon Azizi, Ambassador of Afghanistan and Dr. Dobruna.
During the first visit of then President Jahjaga, the first cooperation with Diplomatic magazine started; thanks to Mayelinne De Lara, we organized Meet & Greet at Carlton Ambassador. Remember going, travelling to Koln in Germany to purchase Kosovo wine to be served next day. Thank you Diplomat Magazine, you have been a true friend and I am going to be always grateful. Cultural diplomacy was very important part of my tenure; several exhibitions are organized here, Wassenaar and in Rotterdam; a small window of getting to know my country was opened. As I will depart from The Hague to Prishtina, taking home many, many sweet memories. I will miss this beautiful country, I will miss long walk in Scheveningen and Wassenaar with my fellow diplomat friends; long, long visits to museums alone and many fast lunches and long dinners! I will not forget my friends here.”

Nowruz celebration at OPCW

H.E. Dr Alireza Jahangiri, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the OPCW during his speech also on the picture from left to right H.E. Mr. Ahmet Uzumcu, Director-General of the OPCW, Permanent Representatives to the OPCW from the embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, H.E. Mr. Mohammad Homayoon Azizi, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and H.E. Mr. Venu Rajamoni, Ambassador of the Republic of India. By Youri Moes. Nowruz, the new year of the Persian people is celebrated every year on the 21st of March, and sees families coming together around a traditional meal. The Persian people have done this for almost 3000 years and their traditions and celebrations are still extraordinary events. Nowruz,  celebrated on March 21, or a day before/after marks the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator and equalizes night and day is calculated exactly every year, and families gather together to observe the rituals of the beginning of spring. H.E. Dr Alireza Jahangiri, Ambassador of Iran with his team.
During Nowruz families eat dishes like Sabzeh, Samanu, Seer, Seeb and Somāq. All of these dishes have meaning, being metaphors for rebirth, vitality and light overcoming darkness. These dishes and their meanings go back thousands of years. These traditions are so impactful and meaningful to so many people,  that Nowruz was placed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, and the United Nations made the 21st of March as International Nowruz Day.
H.E. Abdelouahab Bellouki , Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, H.E. Dr. Hisham Al-Alawi, Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Dr Alireza Jahangiri, Ambassador of Iran and H.E. Mr. Venu Rajamoni, Ambassador of India.
Just like how Nowruz unites families and brings friends together, similarly it brings together Persian people from all over the world. This year in the headquarters of the OPCW, was no exception, with ambassadors from countries with large Persian populations coming together and celebrating a Nowruz feast together. The Embassy of Iran co-hosted the celebration with the embassies of India, Afghanistan and Kazakhstan all OPCW Member States at the headquarters of the global organization in The Hague. H.E. Dr Alireza Jahangiri, ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran made a speech discussing the meaning of the celebration, and the role it has in the modern world. Dr. Jahangiri went on to say, “(Nowruz) promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighborliness, thus contributing to cultural diversity and friendship among peoples and different communities.” The spirit of neighborliness was obviously alive and well, with ambassadors from India H.E. Mr. Venu Rajamoni, from Kazakhstan, H.E. Mr. Magzhan Ilyassov and Afghanistan H.E. Dr. Homayoon Azizi all being present to celebrate the feast.

Together with his international colleagues Dr. Jahangiri went on to say, “Nowruz is an ancient celebration that predates today’s borders and divisions. It is a reminder that national boundaries and other superficial differences are not as important as our common humanity. Nowruz is a perfect example of unity in diversity.” We can only hope that our common humanity carries through to the next Nowruz.

16 European States operation supported by Eurojust

0

Action day launched simultaneously in 16 European States by a French investigative judge with the support of Eurojust

On 11 April, the large-scale ‘Carton Rouge’ operation was initiated by a French Investigative Judge from the Interregional Specialised Jurisdiction of Nancy (JIRS) in cooperation with the French Desk at Eurojust, leading to the arrest of 9 suspects in Paris and Marseille, the freezing of numerous bank accounts, as well as the blocking of internet sites throughout Europe.

The organised crime group (OCG) behind this far-reaching swindling case is suspected of having committed the crimes of fraud, bank fraud, embezzlement, money laundering and participation in a criminal organisation.

Upon the French investigative judge’s request, a case was opened at Eurojust in February 2018, initially involving two Member States. As the case evolved, the number of affected States rose to 16 (15 Member States and 1 third State). Eurojust assisted in the timely and efficient implementation of all necessary legal instruments, such as the execution of European Investigation Orders, and effectively responded to urgent requests for mutual legal assistance. On the action day, under Eurojust’s coordination, national judicial and law enforcement authorities were mobilised across France and bank accounts of the OCG were frozen in several States. In the period between August and November 2017, the members of the OCG impersonated football agents who contacted 15 different French football clubs, claiming that certain football players’ bank accounts had changed and, therefore, the footballers’ salaries needed to be transferred to their allegedly new bank accounts. This fraudulently acquired capital was then further wired from those temporary accounts to accounts in Bulgaria and Malta for money laundering purposes. In the course of the investigation, the French national authorities discovered a parallel swindle performed by the same perpetrators, involving a fake diamonds scheme. The victims were deceived into investing in non-existent diamonds to be supposedly resold at an 8 per cent profit, but never derived any benefit from the fictitious deal. The victims were tricked into investing their capital in bank accounts outside French territory. A similar fraud case, performed by the same OCG, using bitcoins instead of diamonds, was also revealed to the investigating authorities. The proceeds of the OCG yielded by all three illegal activities amount to an estimated total of EUR 2 million, to the detriment of approximately 50 victims.

Malbec World Day 2018

H.E. Mr. Hector Horacio Salvador, Ambassador of the Republic of Argentina in the Netherlands during the opening of Malbec Day 2018. By Michael Bonté. The 8th edition of Malbec wine celebration once again kicked off at the ‘Gauchos restaurant’ located on a lovely lake at Weissenbruchlaan in Rotterdam. Dionysus, the God of Wine looked favourably upon us as the weather turned out fine. The Embassy of Argentina had invited wine connaisseurs to participate in a Malbec wine tasting. A whopping 18 wine importers showcased their Malbec wines. The guests were certainly in for a treat as about 100 wines were presented for tasting. From the North of Argentina wines with a balanced structure and a good ageing potential. From the famous Mendoza region come wines with lighter tannins and from the South of Argentina, which has more rain and more extremer temperatures, comes more complex and fruity wines. The guests went about the tasting room in a spirited way as they nibbled on crackers to get ready for yet another tasting of the excellent wines.  As one of the invitees remarked: ‘Who doesn’t like day time drinking’. As tradition dictated a short Malbec master class was presented by Fransbert Schermer. Who educated the guests in an amusing way about one of Argentina’s great exports.

Ambassador H.E. Mr. Hector Horacio Salvador said: “ In a country where the winemaking tradition is as deeply rooted in its culture as tango, football and asado.” he also remarked that: “Wine is a vehicle for culture” and with those words he presented us with a couple who performed a tango dance. As the sun was out all the guests moved to the lake side lawns of the restaurant to enjoy 100 wines served with an lovely empanada and two different freshly grilled meat dishes from the food truck grill.
